Tabarca Island is a small rocky island located in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Alicante. The island has a rich history. Originally known as Planesia, it was inhabited by the Romans. Subsequently, it became a haven for Barbary pirates. In 1768, King Charles III of Spain ordered the island to be fortified and colonized with Genoese families from the island of Tabarka, off the coast of Tunisia. Since then, it has been known as Tabarca.
